48.9 M
people affected by sepsis worldwide every year
Purotech is a MedTech startup researching new ozone-based solutions with one goal: to give doctors another weapon against sepsis and the infections that antibiotics can no longer stop.
The problem
Sepsis happens when the body's response to an infection starts damaging its own organs. It can get worse within hours. And as antibiotic-resistant bacteria spread, treating it is becoming harder and harder.
48.9 M
people affected by sepsis worldwide every year
11 M
deaths a year: roughly 1 in 5 deaths worldwide
70,000
sepsis-related deaths in Italy in 2020, up from 19,000 in 2003
1/3
of sepsis deaths in the European Union occur in Italy
An extreme reaction of the body to an infection. Instead of defending itself, the body attacks its own tissues and organs. If it isn't recognised and treated quickly, it can lead to septic shock and multiple organ failure.
Some bacteria and other microorganisms have "got used to" medicines and no longer respond to treatment. Infections become harder to treat, spread more easily and are more dangerous.

Why ozone
Ozone is a form of oxygen with strong disinfectant properties, already known and used in medicine. Several studies have observed its action against bacteria and viruses.
That's where our research begins.
The project
Purotech was founded with a clear idea: to combine the properties of ozone with biomedical engineering to support existing therapies in the care of the most critically ill patients. Every step is taken with the rigour that people's health demands.
We study the effects of ozone together with researchers and clinicians, following a rigorous scientific method.
We are working on proprietary technology, born in Italy and designed for the hospital environment.
From day one, we follow the European quality and safety standards that apply to medical devices.
Research and collaborations
The project grows through a network of collaborations with leading academic, clinical and industrial organisations. Each one brings specific expertise and helps us validate every step.
The team
A team that combines decades of experience in healthcare and industry with the drive to build something that matters.
